An adaptive harmonic broadcasting scheme with download and playback synchronisation for video on demand

چکیده
Harmonic broadcasting is a broadcasting scheme to reduce the bandwidth requirement in video-on-demand service where a video is divided into segments of equal size and each segment is repeatedly transmitted over a number of channels having bandwidth that follows a harmonic series. As the bandwidth of channels differ from each other and a user can join at any time to these multicast channels, a synchronisation problem between download and playback is created. To deal with this issue, some schemes have been proposed, however, at the cost of additional or wastage of bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an adaptive harmonic broadcasting scheme that deals with the synchronisation problem at the same average bandwidth consumption as traditional harmonic broadcasting scheme. We present several analytical results to exhibit the efficiency of the proposed scheme over the existing ones.

Single-Channel Data Broadcasting under Small Waiting Latency
Due to the advancement of network technology, video-on-demand (VoD) services are growing in popularity. However, individual stream allocation for client requests easily causes a VoD system overload; when its network and disk bandwidth cannot match client growth. This study thus presents a fundamentally different approach by focusing solely on a class of applications identified as latency tolera...
متن کاملAn Efficient Hierarchical Modulation based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Transmission Scheme for Digital Video Broadcasting
Due to the increase of users the efficient usage of spectrum plays an important role in digital terrestrial television networks. In digital video broadcasting, local and global content are transmitted by single frequency network and multifrequency network respectively. Multifrequency network support transmission of global content and it consumes large spectrum. Similarly local content are well ...
متن کاملJoint-family: Adaptive bitrate video-on-demand streaming over peer-to-peer networks with realistic abandonment patterns
Previous studies of peer-to-peer (P2P) video-on-demand (VoD) are performed separately from studies utilizing adaptive bit rate video since the techniques seemingly tackle orthogonal goals. Additionally, previous policies used by P2P VoD do not account for viewer abandonment of video during download and playback. Through analysis, we show that the popularity of a P2P swarm and seed staying time ...
متن کاملHarmonic broadcasting is bandwidth-optimal assuming constant bit rate
Harmonic broadcasting was introduced by Juhn and Tseng in 1997 as a way to reduce the bandwidth requirements required for video-on-demand broadcasting. In this correspondence, we note that harmonic broadcasting is actually a special case of the priority encoded transmission scheme introduced by Albanese et al. in 1996 and prove—using an information theoretic argument—that it is impossible to ac...
متن کاملAdjustable Interleaving Staircase-Harmonic Broadcasting Scheme for Highly-Demanded Videos
With the growth of broadband networks, Video-on-Demand (VoD) has become realistic. Many significant broadcasting schemes have been proposed to reduce the viewers’ waiting time. However, clients are required to receive video segments altogether from all channels. This disregard not only needs a lot of client bandwidth, but also incurs more buffer requirements. To escape from these constraints, t...
